Provisional Ballots Accepted
Challengers Officially Win Posts 1 & 2. Post 3 Headed for December Run-Off.
As reported on Election Night, there were six (6) provisional ballots cast for the election on Tuesday, November 7. The Gwinnett County Board of Elections determined today that five (5) of the ballots were from voters eligible to participate in the election, changing the vote counts. All five provisional ballots were for the posts’ incumbents.
The race for Post 3 is now tied. The City of Sugar Hill will hold a run-off election for Post 3 in three weeks, on Tuesday, December 5.
The updated vote counts are:
Post 1
Joshua Ray Page: 736
Mason Roszel (i): 717 722
Post 2
Gary Pirkle: 819
Marc Cohen (i): 645 650
Post 3
Meg Avery: 729
Jenn Thatcher (i): 724 729
(i) denotes incumbents for each post.
Originally, I reported that the results would be certified TOMORROW, Wednesday, November 15, because that’s what was verbally announced at the vote count.
The City Attorney explained at last night’s November Council Meeting that previously, there had been a question about how Veteran’s Day, which was on November 11 but observed by governments on November 10, would affect the deadlines. He stated that the Georgia Attorney General issued an opinion stating that the 2023 election results should be certified TODAY, Tuesday, November 14.
The City’s election results have now been officially certified, with the Post 3 race requiring a runoff.
