City Conducts First Public Hearing for the "Envision 100" Update of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan
On Monday July 17, the City conducted its first public meeting regarding Envision 100, the name the City is using for the update of the comprehensive land use plan. Only three of the Sugar Hill Planning Commission (SHPC) members were there
At the meeting, Planning Director Kaipo Awana laid out the steps in the update process, accompanied by a timeline. He claimed that the Mayor and City Council had indicated they wanted as much inclusion from every corner of the City as possible. However, no one from the City who attended the meeting seemed to notice how poor attendance was at THAT meeting.
In a departure from the schedule mentioned at the June City Council meeting, Awana announced that the online Envision 100 survey would be open until August 10 for resident input. In June, he had said they were only going to leave it open a couple more weeks.
The hearing featured a public comments period during which residents could speak about the update process.
During that period, Former Mayor Gary Pirkle asked them about the steering committee for the update. He wanted to know who was on it, and how those individuals were chosen. SHPC Chairman Jeremy White responded that they would not be answering questions.
Resident Andrew Schulz remarked that he hadn't known about the Envision 100 survey or the current hearing until he had heard about them at the monthly City Council meetings (which are usually poorly attended). Schulz continued that more people should be involved in something this important, but the poor attendance at the hearing made him wonder how well the word about Envision 100 is getting out.
The City has set up a virtual input forum for those unable to attend the meeting. The forum is open for a couple more days. So far, only five people have commented, including me.
