Yesterday, the City of Sugar Hill’s election qualifying period ended. All three incumbents with terms ending this year will face challengers in the November 7 election.
CITY COUNCIL POST #1
Mason Roszel (incumbent)
Joshua Ray Page
CITY COUNCIL POST #2
Marc Cohen, (incumbent)
Gary Pirkle
CITY COUNCIL POST #3
Jenn Thatcher (incumbent)
Meg Avery
Many of you will recognize Gary Pirkle, who previously served Sugar Hill as a City Council Member (January 1998 - December 2001) and then as Mayor (January 2002 - December 2013). Pirkle stepped down in 2013, telling the Gwinnett Daily Post at the time, “I thought I did what I could do,” Pirkle said. “I saw a problem I thought I could fix (12 years ago). At this point, I just don’t see another job for me to do here.”
After staying away from public office for ten years, the Former Mayor has decided to ask residents to send him back to City Hall. He began regularly attending meetings last year to speak to the current Mayor and Council regarding financial responsibility and sound growth policies that respect the investments of current taxpaying homeowners.
On his reasons for returning now, Pirkle said,
“I was happy with where the City was in 2013, so I felt my job was done. Unfortunately, since then, the City decided to make a left turn and go high debt and high density.
I started going to council meetings a year ago and trying to get them to make some changes. They would not listen, so I decided to run again. Fortunately, I have Meg and Josh to help me out.”
